Bactrocera amarambalensis is a fruit fly species within the Bactrocera dorsalis complex.[2] Morphologically, members of the subgroup to which B. amarambalensis belongs are characterized by a predominantly black scutum and narrow, parallel-sided lateral postsutural yellow vittae, which measure generally less than 0.15 mm in width at the center.[2] These narrow vittae are considered a potential shared apomorphy for this group.[2]
Bactrocera amarambalensis is recorded from Southern India.[2] It is part of the Bactrocera dorsalis complex, a large and polyphyletic assemblage of approximately 79 morphologically similar fruit fly species distributed across the Asia-Pacific region.[2] The host plant family for this species remains unknown.[2]
