Based on observations of preserved specimens, Azpeytia maculata exhibits characteristic features of the family Syrphidae. The body displays a distinct, patterned appearance, with noticeable maculation (spotting) on the abdomen, which is consistent with its specific epithet. The specimens show typical dipteran morphology, including a single pair of wings and large, prominent compound eyes.[1]
Azpeytia maculata was described by the entomologist Tokuichi Shiraki in 1930. The original description was published in his work Die Syrphiden des japanischen Kaiserreichs, mit Berucksichtigung benachbarter Gebiete.[2]
