This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Azelia gibbera is a small, dark fly, consistent with the general morphology of the genus Azelia, which typically ranges from 2.5 to 5.5 mm in body length.[2] Observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a compact, dark-bodied appearance with prominent, large eyes.[1] The scutum exhibits a distinct contrast, being anteriorly velvety black, while the posterior part of the postsutural area is brownish-grey dusted.[2] The abdomen is typically characterized by a dusted appearance, featuring an interrupted median stripe and paired lateral spots on each tergite.[2]
Azelia gibbera is a Holarctic species.[2] While historically recognized as a European species, its known range has been extended to include Asian localities, such as the Xinjiang region in China, the Altai Republic and Khabarovsk region in Russia, and Ukraine.[2] Flies of the genus Azelia are primarily associated with the dung of large herbivorous animals.[2]
