This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Museum specimens labeled to Axos (including Axos cliftoni) are typically preserved as encrusting to massive sponge bodies with a compact external surface. In the available images, the sponge tissue appears dark (brown to black in preservation) and irregularly textured, with a generally low profile rather than a delicate or filamentous form.
Axos is treated as an accepted genus within Hemiasterellidae (Demospongiae; order Tethyida) by GBIF.[2]
Occurrence and specimen records for Axos in GBIF include material attributed to Axos cliftoni as well as generic records labeled simply Axos.[2]
