This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Based on observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, members of the genus Axinota exhibit typical dipteran morphology.[1] They possess a distinct, robust thorax and a pair of functional wings. The head features prominent compound eyes, and the body coloration generally includes shades of brown or grey, consistent with many curtonotid flies.[1]
Axinota is a genus within the family Curtonotidae. Phylogenetic studies, which have integrated both molecular markers (including CPSase, TPI, and CO1 gene regions) and morphological data, support the monophyly of the Curtonotidae family. These analyses indicate that Axinota forms a primary clade with the genus Curtonotum, which is sister to the remainder of the Curtonotidae.[2]
The genus was described by Wulp in 1886.[3]
