Axinellida is an order within the demosponges (Demospongiae). It is treated as an accepted order-level taxon in GBIF.
Axinellida demosponges are marine, benthic organisms typically photographed or collected as three-dimensional sponge bodies. Records under this order often show erect and/or branching forms as well as cup-, fan-, or mass-form morphologies depending on genus (e.g., Axinella and related axinellid taxa).
Self-splicing introns (mitochondrial Group I and Group II) have been investigated across sponge orders including Axinellida using mitochondrial COI (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) sequences. Evidence from Axinella polypoides (Axinellida) supports that sponge mitochondria can contain both Group I and Group II introns in COI data.
Global Biotic Interaction records for Axinellida include associations between sponge hosts (e.g., Axinella in Axinellida) and microbial taxa, including archaea (e.g., Cenarchaeum and Cenarchaeum symbiosum) and bacteria (e.g., Nitrospira).
