Taxonomy
This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
- Kingdom: Animalia
- Phylum: Porifera
- Class: Demospongiae
- Order: Axinellida
- Family: Axinellidae
- Genus: Axinella
- Species: Axinella donnani
Visual Description
Specimens and field observations available through the GBIF/iNaturalist-linked image records show Axinella donnani as an erect to fan-like sponge with an axinellid demospongian overall habit (branching/laminar framework appearance in museum specimen images).
Ecology and Associations
Axinella donnani is documented as a host species in studies of sponge-associated endosymbiotic bacteria.
Microbial Symbionts and Antimicrobial Activity
A laboratory study focusing on endosymbiotic bacteria associated with several sponge hosts collected from the southern peninsular coast of India included Axinella donnani as one of the host species.
- Culturing of sponge-associated endosymbionts on different marine media indicated that sponge extract–supplemented media supported higher bacterial growth overall, with A. donnani showing the highest bacterial counts among the sampled hosts.
- The study reports 13 endosymbiotic bacterial strains screened from A. donnani for antibacterial activity against a panel of pathogens (including human and shrimp pathogens) using an agar-well diffusion assay; two strains, ESB-3 and ESB-7, showed the strongest activity.
- Molecular identification of ESB-3 and ESB-7 based on partial 16S rRNA gene sequencing and similarity search (NCBI/BLAST) identified them as Bacillus subtilis.
Nomenclature and Data Sources
GBIF treats Axinella donnani (Bowerbank, 1873) as an accepted name for the species Axinella donnani.
