Taxonomy
This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
- Kingdom: Animalia
- Phylum: Porifera
- Class: Demospongiae
- Order: Axinellida
- Family: Axinellidae
- Genus: Axinella
- Species: Axinella cannabina
Visual Description
Axinella cannabina is depicted as a branched, upright sponge forming erect, finger- or candlestick-like structures. Specimen imagery in GBIF/iNaturalist and museum collections commonly shows a bright orange to yellow-orange coloration and a fibrous/knobbly surface texture typical of axinellid sponges.
Bioactive and In vitro Activity (Literature)
A Mediterranean-organism study reported that Axinella cannabina extracts (methanol extract) contain measurable phenolic compounds and show modest in vitro bioactivity in a panel of antioxidant and enzyme-inhibition assays. Reported results include:
- Total phenolic content: 95.13 ± 13.47 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g extract. [2]
- Ferric reducing power (antioxidant assay): 0.0374 ± 0.0031 (at the highest test concentration reported in the study’s table). [2]
- Total antioxidant capacity (TAC; phosphomolybdenum assay): 0.0060 ± 0.0012. [2]
- ABTS radical scavenging activity: 4.11 ± 1.98%. [2]
- Metal chelating capacity: reported as low relative to EDTA (5.19 ± 1.65% at 3 mg/mL). [2]
- Antidiabetic enzyme inhibition (α-glucosidase): 6.63 ± 5.52% at 3000 µg/mL. [2]
- Antidiabetic enzyme inhibition (α-amylase): 7.24 ± 2.23% at 3000 µg/mL. [2]
