This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Axarus is a genus of non-biting midges within the family Chironomidae. Observations of specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal typical chironomid morphology, characterized by a slender, elongated body and delicate, long legs.[1] The wings are typically clear or lightly patterned, and the antennae in males are often plumose, a common trait among many chironomid genera.[1]
The genus Axarus was established by Roback in 1980.[2] Recent taxonomic work has focused on the Neotropical region, including the description of new species such as Axarus cordiformis from the Brazilian Amazon.[3] The known distribution of several species, including Axarus globosus, Axarus intervales, and Axarus diabolicus, has also been expanded through recent studies.[3]
