This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Austrosimulium montanum is a species of black fly. Based on examination of museum specimen images, the adult exhibits the characteristic compact, robust body form typical of the family Simuliidae. The specimens display a dark, sclerotized exoskeleton, with visible wing venation patterns consistent with the genus Austrosimulium[1].
Austrosimulium montanum was described by I.M. Mackerras and M.J. Mackerras in 1952[2]. Research into the DNA barcoding of austral black flies has utilized the COI gene to aid in species identification. Genetic analysis indicates a divergence of approximately 0.5% between A. montanum and the related species Austrosimulium cornutum[3].
