This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Members of the genus Austrosimulium are small flies typical of the family Simuliidae. Based on observations of museum specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, they exhibit the characteristic robust, hump-backed body form common to blackflies.[1] The specimens display short, stout antennae and relatively broad, rounded wings. The coloration is generally dark, ranging from brownish to blackish, which is consistent with their classification as blackflies.[1]
Austrosimulium is a genus of blackflies within the family Simuliidae.[2] Taxonomic revisions have clarified the placement of certain species; for instance, Austrosimulium colboi has been reassigned to the genus Paraustrosimulium based on molecular and morphological evidence.[3]
Interactions recorded for this genus include associations with various viruses, such as blackfly genomoviruses, which have been identified in association with Austrosimulium.[4]
