Austrosciapus riparius is a species of long-legged fly within the family Dolichopodidae. Based on examination of preserved museum specimens, individuals exhibit the characteristic slender body form typical of the subfamily Sciapodinae. The specimens display elongated legs and metallic coloration, which are common features in this genus.[1]
Austrosciapus riparius was described by the entomologist Daniel J. Bickel in 1994. The original description was published in his comprehensive work on the Australian Sciapodinae, which also included reviews of the Oriental and Australasian faunas and a world conspectus of the subfamily.[2]
