This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Austrosciapus capricornis is a member of the family Dolichopodidae, commonly known as long-legged flies. Observations of specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal characteristic features of this group.[1] The flies exhibit a slender, elongated body form typical of the subfamily Sciapodinae. They possess long, thin legs that are disproportionately long relative to their body size. The wings are clear and held horizontally or slightly spread when at rest. The thorax and abdomen often display metallic or iridescent coloration, which is a common trait among many species in the genus Austrosciapus.[1]
Austrosciapus capricornis was described by Daniel J. Bickel in 1994.[2] This species is part of the Australian Sciapodinae fauna, as detailed in Bickel's comprehensive review of the subfamily.
