This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Austrosciapus is a genus of long-legged flies within the family Dolichopodidae. Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, members of this genus typically exhibit a slender body form characteristic of the subfamily Sciapodinae.[1] Many species, such as Austrosciapus connexus, are noted for their metallic green coloration, which is visible across the thorax and abdomen.[2] The legs are notably long and slender, often appearing yellowish or brownish in color.[1]
The genus Austrosciapus was described by Daniel J. Bickel in 1992. It is a member of the subfamily Sciapodinae.[3] Morphological studies have compared the oviscapt structure of certain fossil species, such as Wheelerenomyia corcula, to that of Austrosciapus, noting similarities in the ninth tergum, which is divided into two long, narrow hemitergites, each bearing two long, simple setae, with cerci that are distinctly longer than the hemitergites.[4]
Interactions have been recorded for species within the genus, such as Austrosciapus proximus, which has been observed interacting with plants like Phormium tenax and insects in the family Caeciliusidae.[5]
