This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Austrosaropogon nigrinus is a species of robber fly (family Asilidae). Observations of specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a robust, elongated body typical of many asilids.[1] The thorax is well-developed, supporting strong, functional legs adapted for predatory behavior. The wings are clear and extend beyond the abdomen, which is slender and tapers towards the posterior end. The overall coloration is predominantly dark, consistent with the specific epithet nigrinus.[1]
Austrosaropogon nigrinus was originally described by the French entomologist Pierre-Justin-Marie Macquart in 1850 under the name Dasypogon nigrinus.[2] It is currently recognized as an accepted species within the genus Austrosaropogon.
