Austroplex is a genus of horse flies in the family Tabanidae. It was described by the entomologist I.M. Mackerras in 1955.[1]
This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[2]
Based on observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, members of the genus Austroplex exhibit characteristic features of the family Tabanidae.[2] The specimens typically display a robust, fly-like body form with large, prominent compound eyes, which are diagnostic of the family. The wings are well-developed and often show characteristic venation patterns typical of tabanids. Due to the nature of the preserved museum specimens in the dataset, finer morphological details such as specific antennal structures or setal patterns are difficult to resolve without high-magnification imaging.[2]
