Austrolimnophila harperi is a crane fly characterized by a slender, elongated body typical of the family Limoniidae. Observations of specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a dark-pigmented, elongated abdomen and long, thin legs.[1] The wings are translucent with a distinct venation pattern.[1]
Austrolimnophila harperi (Alexander, 1926) is a Holarctic species, with a distribution spanning across northern Eurasia and North America.[2] It was originally described as Limnophila harperi by C.P. Alexander in 1926.[3]
The species is classified within the subgenus Austrolimnophila (Archilimnophila), a relatively small group within the genus Austrolimnophila. It can be distinguished from related species, such as Austrolimnophila (Archilimnophila) barkalovi, by the structure of its gonapophyses, which consist of two pairs of curved, dark-pigmented, elongated spines.
