This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Based on observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Austroleptis species are small flies characterized by a distinct body form.[1] They typically exhibit a slender abdomen and wings that are often patterned.[1] The head and thorax show varied coloration depending on the species, with some displaying darker scutum coloration.[1]
The genus Austroleptis belongs to the family Austroleptidae.[2] Historically, the genus was known from Australia and Chile, but its range has been expanded to include species in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, such as A. longirostris and A. papaveroi.
These flies are considered to have southern temperate connections, linking southern South America with Australia and New Zealand. Morphological features of the genus include the subdivision of the female tergite 8.
