Austrohalipegus is a genus of digenetic trematodes belonging to the family Derogenidae within the order Plagiorchiida. The genus was formally described by T. Cribb in 1988. Within this genus, the species Austrohalipegus anguillicola is recognized.[1][2]
These trematodes are associated with freshwater fishes in Australia. Documented occurrences of the genus are concentrated in a range between approximately 27°S to 28°S latitude and 152°E to 153°E longitude, with records dating back to at least the early 1980s.[1]
Specimens of Austrohalipegus are characterized by an elongated, somewhat flattened body that tapers toward the posterior end, while the anterior end remains rounded. When viewed under microscopy, the internal anatomy is revealed through staining, showing distinct structures such as the oral sucker and pharynx, alongside various reproductive organs appearing as darker, stained regions within the translucent body.
