This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Austrocnephia is a genus of black flies (family Simuliidae) established by Craig, Currie, Gil-Azevedo, and Moulton in 2019.[2] The genus was created to accommodate five species previously classified within the genus Paracnephia.[2] The formal description of the genus was published in Zootaxa as part of a broader work that also provided a key to Australian black fly genera.[2]
While specific morphological traits are best examined through detailed taxonomic keys, specimens of Austrocnephia (such as A. aurantiaca and A. orientale) observed in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset exhibit the characteristic body form of Simuliidae, including a compact, robust thorax and relatively short, broad wings.[1] These specimens typically display a dark, often brownish or blackish, sclerotized cuticle.[1]
