Austroascia segersi is a small hoverfly. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset indicate that the species possesses a slender, dark-colored body.[1] The head features prominent eyes, and the wings are clear with distinct venation.[1]
Austroascia segersi is the type species of the genus Austroascia, which is classified within the subfamily Eristalinae, tribe Brachyopini, and subtribe Spheginina.[2] The genus is distinguished from other eristaline genera by the combination of a complete postmetacoxal bridge and a pilose anterior mesopleuron.

Austroascia segersi is a species of hoverfly described from the Valparaiso Province of Chile. It has been observed in the Bosque Relicto at Quintero, Chile, where adults were found hovering around and feeding on the flowers of "canelo" (Drimys winteri) during October. Specimens have also been collected in January at El Salto, Valparaiso, indicating a flight period spanning the austral summer. The species appears to be closely associated with Drimys winteri, and it is hypothesized that its early life stages may also be restricted to this plant.
