Based on observations of museum specimens, Australosymmerus nebulosus exhibits distinct morphological features. The wings are characterized by a complex venation pattern and a subtle, iridescent sheen visible under certain lighting conditions.[1] The thorax is robust and yellowish-brown, covered with numerous small, dark punctations (pits) and fine, sparse setae.[1]
Australosymmerus nebulosus was described by the entomologist D.H. Colless in 1970. The original description was published in the Journal of the Australian Entomological Society as part of a series on the Mycetophilidae of Australia.[2]
