This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Based on observations of preserved specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Australosymmerus insolitus exhibits typical dipteran morphology.[1] The specimens display slender, elongated bodies and delicate, membranous wings characteristic of the family Ditomyiidae. The legs are notably long and thin, and the antennae are prominent, extending forward from the head. Due to the nature of these preserved museum specimens, finer details such as specific setal patterns or precise wing venation are difficult to resolve in the available imagery.[1]
Australosymmerus insolitus was originally described by Francis Walker in 1836 as Platyura insolita.[2] It is currently recognized as an accepted species within the genus Australosymmerus.
