This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Australosymmerus specimens exhibit typical dipteran features, including a slender body and prominent wings.[1] The wings are often clear or lightly patterned, and the legs are elongated, characteristic of many members of the family Ditomyiidae.[1]
The family Ditomyiidae is a small group of Diptera comprising approximately 15 genera and 107 species, with a global distribution excluding the Afrotropical region.[2] Within the Neotropical region, 32 species are described across nine genera, with four of these genera, including Australosymmerus, present in Brazil. The genus Australosymmerus is noted for its presence in tropical forest areas.
Morphological characteristics of the family Ditomyiidae include a very short subcostal vein (sc), a long R2+3 vein that ends freely (forming a third fork in front of the anterior fork, M1+M2), and a crossvein (tb) connected to the posterior fork (M4).
