Australoconops picus is a species of thick-headed fly within the family Conopidae. While specific morphological details are difficult to resolve from available digital records, members of the genus Australoconops generally exhibit the characteristic appearance of conopids, which often mimic aculeate Hymenoptera (such as wasps or bees).[1]
Australoconops picus was originally described by the French entomologist Pierre-Justin-Marie Macquart in 1851, under the basionym Conops pica.[2] As a member of the family Conopidae, it belongs to a group of flies known for their endoparasitic larvae, which typically develop inside other insects, most commonly Hymenoptera.
