This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Australiphthiria hilaris is a small, bee-like fly characteristic of the family Bombyliidae. Observations of specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a robust, somewhat fuzzy body, typical of many bee flies.[1] The insects exhibit a distinct pattern of coloration on the abdomen, often featuring alternating bands or patches of dark and lighter, yellowish or brownish hairs. The wings are generally clear or lightly tinted, with visible venation patterns characteristic of the genus. The head is dominated by large, prominent compound eyes, and the mouthparts are elongated, forming a rigid proboscis used for feeding on nectar.[1]
Australiphthiria hilaris was originally described by Francis Walker in 1852 as Phthiria hilaris.[2] It is an accepted species within the genus Australiphthiria.
