This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, members of the genus Australiphthiria exhibit typical bee fly morphology.[1] They are characterized by a compact, often hairy body, and possess a distinct, elongated proboscis adapted for nectar feeding. The wings are typically clear or lightly patterned, and the overall body coloration often includes shades of brown, black, or yellow, which may provide camouflage or mimicry.
Australiphthiria is a genus within the subfamily Phthiriinae. Phylogenetic studies have identified a clade comprising Phthiria and the group (Acreotrichus + Pygocona + Australiphthiria), which is distinguished by the presence of a bare mesopleuron.[2] This clade is considered a sister group to Acreophthiria and Neacrotrichus.
