Australapatemon is a genus of digenean trematodes within the family Strigeidae, order Diplostomida. The genus was described by Sudarikov in 1959 and is currently recognized as a valid taxonomic group containing approximately 22 species, including A. minor, A. burti, A. magnacetabulum, and A. anseris.[1][2][3][4][5]
Species within this genus exhibit complex life cycles involving multiple hosts. Larval stages, including sporocysts and cercariae, develop within freshwater snails, particularly those in the family Lymnaeidae. Metacercariae typically utilize hirudinean (leech) hosts, such as Erpobdella octoculata, for development. Adult flukes are parasitic, residing in the intestines of various waterfowl, including members of the order Anseriformes, such as the New Zealand scaup (Aythya novaeseelandiae).[1][3]
