Austalis rhynchops is a hoverfly characterized by a robust, bee-like appearance typical of many Syrphidae. Observations from available imagery indicate a body with distinct, patterned abdominal markings, often featuring bands of dark and lighter coloration. The head is prominent, with large, holoptic eyes in males, and the thorax exhibits a dense covering of fine, hair-like setae. The wings are clear and held in a characteristic position when at rest.[1]
Austalis rhynchops was originally described by Mario Bezzi in 1928 as Eristalis rhynchops, based on material from the Fiji Islands.[2] It is currently recognized as an accepted species within the genus Austalis.
