Museum specimen images indicate a sponge with a preserved, irregularly lobate external form. The visible surface appears uneven and texture-rich, consistent with an axinellid/raspailiid-like growth form in which the sponge body is firm and can form lobes or compressed masses in preservation.
GBIF lists Aulospongus gardineri (Dendy, 1922) as an accepted species name, and provides a basionym as Plumohalichondria gardineri Dendy, 1922.
