This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Aulacigaster mcalpinei is a small fly, consistent with the general morphology of the family Aulacigastridae, which typically includes species ranging from 2 to 5 mm in length. Observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a dark-colored body covered in a thin, gray tomentum. The head features prominent, relatively large eyes. The wings are clear and exhibit the characteristic venation of the family, including a complete subcosta that reaches the wing margin and the presence of both radiomedial (r-m) and medial-cubital (dm-cu) crossveins.[1],[2]
Aulacigaster mcalpinei was described by Mathis and Freidberg in 1994.[3] Like other members of the family Aulacigastridae, this species is associated with saprophagous habits, with larvae typically developing in plant exudates from tree wounds or in phytotelmata.
