This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Atypophthalmus umbratus is a species of crane fly. Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, the adult exhibits the characteristic slender body and long, delicate legs typical of the family Limoniidae.[1] The wings are generally clear or lightly patterned, and the body coloration is often brownish or yellowish, consistent with its cryptic appearance.[1]
Atypophthalmus umbratus is considered a non-native, allochthonous species in Europe, where its introduction is largely attributed to the global ornamental plant trade.[2] The larvae are capable of surviving and pupating within the soil of ornamental plants, which facilitates their unintentional dispersal across international borders.
The species has been documented in several European countries, including the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Spain, Hungary, Slovakia, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, and Romania.
Genetic analysis, specifically using the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, is used for the identification of this species. DNA barcoding has shown high identity with sequences from unidentified crane fly specimens in Australia, China, Pakistan, and Taiwan.
