This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Based on observations of preserved specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Atylotus thoracicus exhibits characteristic features of the family Tabanidae.[1] The specimens display a robust, fly-like body structure with large, compound eyes typical of the genus. The thorax and abdomen show a dense covering of fine, short hairs (setae), and the coloration is generally muted, consisting of shades of brown and grey. The wings are membranous and clear, with visible venation patterns consistent with the Tabanidae family.
Atylotus thoracicus is known to be a host for the entomopathogenic fungus Entomophaga tabanivora.[2]
