This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Atylotus quadrifarius exhibits typical morphological characteristics of the genus Atylotus.[1] The specimens display a robust, fly-like body structure with compound eyes that are characteristic of the family Tabanidae.[1] The coloration is generally muted, consistent with other members of the genus, and the wings are clear.[1]
Atylotus quadrifarius (Loew, 1874) is a Palearctic species.[2] Its distribution spans the western Mediterranean, including Morocco, the Iberian Peninsula, and France, as well as the eastern Mediterranean, covering Greece, Turkey, the Levant, Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan.[3] The species is also found in northern regions, extending from Ukraine to southern Siberia and Central Asia.[3]
While historical literature suggested its presence in Cyprus, recent surveys have not confirmed this.[3] In 2005, the species was recorded on Lesvos (Northern Aegean islands), where females were observed attacking humans and donkeys near salt pans at sea level.[3]
