This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Based on examination of museum specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Atylotus nigromaculatus exhibits typical morphological characteristics of the genus Atylotus.[1] The specimens display a robust, fly-like body structure with compound eyes that are characteristic of the family Tabanidae. The coloration is generally muted, consistent with other members of the genus. Due to the nature of the preserved specimens, fine details such as specific hair patterns or exact wing venation are difficult to resolve in the available imagery.[1]
Atylotus nigromaculatus has been referenced in molecular studies concerning the identification of tabanid species. In a study conducted in Senegal, molecular analysis of the cox1 gene in Atylotus fuscipes specimens demonstrated a 99% identity with sequences identified as Atylotus nigromaculatus and Atylotus diurnus from East Africa.[2]
