This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Based on observations of museum specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Atylotus diurnus exhibits the characteristic morphology of the family Tabanidae.[1] The specimens display a robust body form with large, prominent compound eyes typical of the genus. The thorax and abdomen are covered in fine, dense setae, and the coloration appears generally muted, consistent with many species in this group.[1]
Atylotus diurnus was originally described by Francis Walker in 1850 as Tabanus diurnus.[2] Phylogenetic studies have indicated that A. diurnus is closely related to other Atylotus species, such as A. nigromaculatus, with high sequence identity in mitochondrial markers like cox1.[3]
