This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Based on observations of preserved specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Atylotus calcar exhibits the characteristic robust, compact body form typical of the family Tabanidae.[1] The specimens display a dense, somewhat pilose (hairy) appearance on the thorax and abdomen, which is a common feature within the genus Atylotus. The wings are clear and membranous, with distinct venation patterns typical of horse flies. The head is dominated by large, compound eyes, which in these specimens appear relatively uniform in color.[1]
Atylotus calcar is a species of horse fly described by H.J. Teskey in 1983.[2] It was identified as part of the Atylotus insuetus group, with its description published in The Canadian Entomologist as part of a review covering western North American species, including information on immature stages.
