This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Based on fossil specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Atriculicoides exhibits the characteristic body form of a small biting midge.[1] The specimens show a compact, rounded thorax and a distinct, segmented abdomen. The wings are typically broad and held over the dorsal surface of the body in the fossilized state.[1]
Atriculicoides is an extinct genus established by Remm in 1976.[2] It is classified within the subfamily Forcipomyiinae and the tribe Atriculicoidini.[3] This genus was prevalent in Upper Cretaceous fossil resins, particularly those from the Khatanga Depression. It is widely considered to be the most probable ancestral group for the extant tribes Forcipomyiini and Dasyheleini.[3]
