This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
The species Atherigona oryzae is a shoot fly in the family Muscidae. While specific morphological traits are difficult to resolve from the available dataset images, the genus Atherigona is generally characterized by small, often yellowish or greyish bodies.[1]
Atherigona oryzae (Malloch) is a shoot fly species that has transitioned from a minor pest to a major pest of wheat (Triticum spp.) in northern Karnataka, India, where it can cause over 26% "dead heart" damage at the seedling stage.[2]
Research conducted during the 2012–2013 rabi season in Dharwad, Karnataka, involved screening 273 wheat germplasms for resistance to A. oryzae based on the percentage of dead hearts recorded at 20, 40, and 60 days after sowing. While no genotypes were found to be highly resistant, 35 entries were categorized as resistant, 123 as moderately resistant, 78 as susceptible, and 37 as highly susceptible. Specific genotypes identified as resistant in this study include PZ-RI-07, CZ-T8, and CZ-RF-16.
