This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Based on observations of preserved specimens, members of the genus Atelestus are small flies characterized by a compact body form. The specimens exhibit a dark, often brownish or blackish coloration across the thorax and abdomen. The wings are typically clear or slightly infuscated, with venation patterns characteristic of the family Atelestidae. The legs are relatively slender, and the head features prominent compound eyes.[1]
Atelestus is a genus of flies within the family Atelestidae, first described by Francis Walker in 1837.[2] Recent taxonomic work has expanded the genus with the description of new West Palaearctic species, such as Atelestus turcicus and Atelestus ibericus.[3]
The genus includes several species, and research continues to clarify their distribution and diagnostic characters. For instance, Atelestus dissonans has been newly recorded in Spain and Bulgaria, and Atelestus pulicarius has been documented in Turkey.[3]
