Based on observations of Astylopogon specimens, including Astylopogon catharinae, the genus exhibits characteristic features of the family Asilidae.[1] The head features prominent, large compound eyes typical of robber flies, which are separated dorsally. The body displays a robust, elongated form with distinct thoracic and abdominal segments. The surface of the thorax and abdomen is covered in fine, hair-like setae, which vary in density and orientation across different body regions. The coloration is generally muted, consistent with many asilid species, often featuring shades of brown and grey.[1]
Astylopogon is a genus of robber flies within the family Asilidae. It was described by the entomologist Johannes Cornelis Hendrik de Meijere in 1913.[2]
