This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
A museum-fossil record associated with this order (as represented in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset) corresponds to a sponge body form preserved as an invertebrate fossil specimen labeled Astylomanon (Yale Peabody Museum; museum specimen, invertebrate zoology).[1]
Astylospongiid demosponges treated in paleontological literature are distinguished (in part) by architecture of the excurrent canal system in fossil material. An Ordovician example illustrating this taxonomic emphasis is the erected astylospongiid genus Tympanospongia, discussed as being distinguishable by exhalent/excurrent canal-system morphology and treated within Family Astylospongiidae.[2]
