This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Astroscleridae is a family within the marine sponge order Agelasida (class Demospongiae). It is recognized as an accepted family by GBIF.[2]
This family is represented in biodiversity and specimen databases (e.g., museum collections linked through GBIF), including species such as Astrosclera willeyana, Ceratoporella nicholsoni, Goreauiella auriculata, Hispidopetra miniana, and Stromatospongia vermicola.[2]
Museum-preserved specimens associated with Astroscleridae are illustrated in online collection images. The dataset images available under this family-level path include examples labelled as “sclerosponges” (e.g., Stromatospongia vermicola and Ceratoporella nicholsoni), indicating that members in this family are often represented in collections with morphology consistent with sclerosponges (sponges with a more mineralized framework) as photographed/archived by museums.[1]
Natural products chemistry has reported antifungal activity–related metabolites from deep-water marine sponges assigned to Astroscleridae. In particular, Yang et al. (2003) structurally elucidated a new antifungal sterol sulfate (Sch 575867) isolated from a deep-water sponge from the family Astroscleridae.[3]
