This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, members of the genus Astrophanes exhibit typical bee fly (Bombyliidae) morphology.[1] They are characterized by a robust, often densely pilose (hairy) body, which provides a bee-like appearance. The wings are typically clear or patterned, and the proboscis is often elongated, adapted for nectar feeding. Due to the nature of the available imagery, finer diagnostic morphological details such as specific venation patterns or setal arrangements are not consistently resolvable.[1]
The genus Astrophanes was established by the entomologist Carl Robert Osten-Sacken in 1886.[2] It is classified within the family Bombyliidae, commonly known as bee flies.
