This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Based on observations of specimens within the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Astomella flies exhibit a characteristic robust, hump-backed body form typical of the family Acroceridae.[1] They possess a small head relative to the large, globose thorax, and the abdomen is often broad and rounded.[1]
Astomella is a genus within the family Acroceridae, a group of flies commonly known as spider flies. These insects are specialized endoparasitoids of true spiders (Araneae).[2] Documented hosts for Astomella species include spiders from the families Ctenizidae and Theraphosidae, which are members of the infraorder Mygalomorphae.
The species Astomella hispaniae has a distribution that includes parts of Southern Europe, Turkey, Syria, and Algeria. Within Turkey, it has been recorded in the provinces of Antalya and Konya.
