This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Members of the genus Asteia are small, delicate flies. Based on observations of museum specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, they typically exhibit a slender body form with relatively long, thin legs and wings that are often longer than the abdomen.[1] The coloration is frequently pale or yellowish, sometimes with darker markings on the thorax or abdomen.[1]
The genus Asteia was described by Meigen in 1830.[2] While the life history of many species remains poorly understood, larvae are generally considered to be (phyto)saprophagous, developing in decaying plant material.[3] Adults are often found in sunny, sheltered habitats, such as the margins of deciduous or mixed forests.[3] Some species, such as Asteia beata, have been observed visiting flowers.[4]
