This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Asphondylia ovata is a species of gall midge within the family Cecidomyiidae. Observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset show typical morphological traits associated with the genus Asphondylia.[1] The adults exhibit the delicate, slender body form characteristic of many gall midges, with long, thin legs and wings that are typically held over the abdomen when at rest. The coloration is generally muted, often appearing in shades of brown or grey, which may aid in camouflage on host plant surfaces.[1]
Asphondylia ovata was described by Plakidas in 2016.[2] Like other members of the genus Asphondylia, this species is a gall-inducing insect.[3] The genus is known for high levels of host specialization, with many species being monophagous.[3] Asphondylia ovata has been documented interacting with plants in the genus Bidens (Asteraceae), including Bidens mitis.[4]
