Asphondylia melanopus is a species of gall midge within the family Cecidomyiidae. Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, individuals exhibit the characteristic delicate, slender morphology typical of many cecidomyiids, with long, thin legs and antennae.[1]
Asphondylia melanopus was described by Kieffer in 1890.[2] This species is known to interact with Lotus corniculatus (common bird's-foot trefoil).[3]
The genus-group name Asphondylia Loew, 1850, has been subject to nomenclatural study. The name Asphondilia Rondani, 1861, and Phillophaga Lioy, 1864, are considered synonyms of Asphondylia Loew, 1850.[4]
