Asilostoma is a genus of flies in the family Lauxaniidae. It was described by the entomologist Friedrich Hendel in 1925.[1]
This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[2]
Based on observations of preserved specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, members of the genus Asilostoma exhibit typical characteristics of the family Lauxaniidae.[2] These flies generally possess a robust, somewhat elongated body form. The head is often characterized by prominent, widely spaced eyes and distinct chaetotaxy (bristle patterns) on the head and thorax, which are diagnostic features for the family. The wings are typically clear or lightly patterned, and the legs are relatively slender. Due to the nature of the preserved museum specimens, finer morphological details such as specific wing venation patterns or microscopic setal arrangements may be difficult to resolve without specialized magnification.[2]
