Visual Description
Archytas aterrima is a robust fly characteristic of the family Tachinidae. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset indicate that the species possesses a dark, often blackish, overall coloration.[1] The body is typically covered in dense, stiff bristles (setae), which are a common feature among tachinids. The head features large, prominent compound eyes and well-developed antennae. The thorax and abdomen are heavily sclerotized, with the abdomen often showing a distinct, rounded shape typical of the genus Archytas.[1]
Distribution and Classification
Archytas aterrima was originally described by Robineau-Desvoidy in 1830 under the basionym Jurinia aterrima.[2] It is a recognized species within the genus Archytas. In the context of South American tachinid studies, the species has been discussed alongside other Archytas members, with some historical records of related species in Chile being re-evaluated as misidentifications.[3]
